Introducing the Holocene: a coffee table with a conscience

The Holocene Table and the Inspiration Behind it

"Thank You for Being Late", a book by well known New York Times Journalist, Thomas Friedman, gives an incredibly in-depth and quite overwhelming analysis of the current state of the modern world. It is the inspiration behind the design of our newest coffee table. In his book, Friedman eloquently discusses how society and our environment are impacted by the exponentially accelerating advances in technology, market globalization, and industrialization. The reader can’t help but appreciate the delicate nature of the Holocene Era, the current geographic epoch which supports life as we know it. This table  represents the tenuous situation we humans face.

Climate change, loss of biodiversity, deforestation and biochemical flow have already been realized, leaving us at the precipice of an uninhabitable world.

The Holocene table is constructed as a series of 5 discrete bamboo rings balanced  perfectly, yet seemingly tenuously on delicate anodized aluminum supports.  The design represents a centered, currently stable earth whose weight is supported by  four barely balanced planetary boundaries that we humans have transgressed, leaving us teetering at the edge of the Holocene period, the only time in our planet’s 4 billion year  existence capable of supporting life.

When you buy a Holocene Coffee Table from Modify Furniture, we will send you a $100.00 gift card towards the Kiva Foundation. Kiva is an international nonprofit, founded in 2005 and based in San Francisco.  Kiva's mission is to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty. At Modify, we feel that rather than donating directly to an organization, with a Kiva card, you have the unique opportunity to choose the people, community and mission you want to support. You can see first hand how your loan helps a new business grow and prosper. Read more about KIVA and how how it works.

Each Holocene Table is custom made to order at the Modify Furniture Sorkshop in Bridgeport, CT.
